Next Level

‘Next Level’ is a project by Théâtre de la Cour, specifically targeted at youths aged between 16 and 25 in areas at risk of juvenile delinquency and/or other behavioural problems and youth in the academic world, with the intention of integrating people through a communal dream.

A pilot project started in August 2016 in the district of “Gorge de Loup” in Lyon, with a small number of youth Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET). For 6 weeks with 3 encounters per week, theatre experts, musicians and social workers worked on involving youth at risk in activities related to theatre, dance and music/percussions and at the same time exploring what the participants are skilled with. At the end of the 6 weeks a small presentation of their work was shown in the streets of the district to create an awareness of the project, in the form of a street parade that went from “cour” to “cour” (courtyard to courtyard), animating events as they went along, like a pac-man in a digital game (hence the name Next Level) e.g . in one courtyard there was a choir, in another a hip hop artist – as our parade passed them we “activated” them and these groups then ineracted with the theatre experts and the youths.

An essential part of the whole project was to create a filming-and-editing workshop, with the teenagers involed, that would document the event. Our Directeur des Arts Visuels et Communications, Silvio Cimenti motivated and direct the youths, in producing the beolow linked film, from start to finished product. The film was later presented to the Marie du 9eme arrondissement de Lyon (the city hall of the 9eme district of Lyon).
